The W Trek is one of the most iconic hikes in Patagonia, and genuinely one of the best experiences of my life.

However, planning the W Trek can be pretty overwhelming. I remember when I first started looking into it last year, I didn’t know where to begin. Which itinerary should I do? How do I book the refugios? What do I need to pack?!

Now that I’ve come back from the trip, I decided to write an article on my travel blog to put together all helpful information and resources in one place, and hopefully help others make this adventure come true! Everything is based on my first-hand experience - no inaccurate ChatGPT, no outdated information, but all that I wish I had known before going on the hike.

Some shots from 10 days on the Carretera Austral, a spectacular 1.240km long highway in Chilean Patagonia. The highway goes through beautiful sceneries and landscapes, known for their remoteness.

Although we didn’t have time to drive the entire Carretera, we explored a good portion of its northern section:
🌋 Chaitén, a peaceful little town still recovering from a disruptive eruption from a nearby volcano in 2008;
🌳 Pumalín Park, a lush, green reserve which was purchased by The North Face founder Douglas Tompkins, who worked to protect it from deforestation and restore its natural beauty;
⛰️ Parque Cerro Castillo, home to a stunning mountain peak where we had the most nerve-wracking hike of our trip!

And there would have been so much more to explore, which we didn’t get a chance to! I feel that we only touched the surface of what the region has to offer. So here’s to wishing we will back one day in Patagonia and spend more time in this magical corner of the world!

Like many glaciers around the world, Grey Glacier is retreating rapidly, losing over 1,300 meters only in the past 30 years. Standing on the shore, just a step from the melting ice, we watched in silence while it cracked and crumbled before us. It was breathtaking and heartbreaking at the same time.

Perito Moreno glacier really gave us a show…

We were walking on one of the trails with views over the main frontal section. At some point, we heard some loud, low rumbling noise coming from the ice… like something large was moving. We stopped to watch and then, suddenly, a HUGE chunk of the front face calved in different spots and as we watched astonished, massive chunks of ice fell into the water with a booming splash. We almost couldn’t believe what we had just seen.

And then minutes later… it happened again! By the end of our visit, basically the whole front facade was completely gone. Perito Moreno had a totally new face compared to the start of the day!

Fun fact: unlike most glaciers around the world that are retreating due to climate change, Perito Moreno is one of the few that is actually growing! It advances around two meters per day, and the calving we saw is just part of its natural cycle of renewal.

The W trek was one of the most demanding physical challenges I’ve ever done - before this trip I had never gone on a hike longer than 6km, so I consider it a huge personal achievement! Before going, I was so nervous about it I developed a painful knot on my back which made carrying my 40L backpack even more difficult, and I almost told myself I was not going to make it… well, one thing that I learned from this experience is how resilient and strong our bodies can be in times of need!

Also, the thing is: once you’ve started the 50+km hike, walking from one Refugio to the next, there’s only one way to go: forward. Unless you’re cool with spending the night in the wild with pumas 😅

While I had seen photos of the Perito Moreno glacier, nothing had prepared me for the true immensity and vastness of this glacier! It is HUMONGOUS, seriously, photos don’t do it justice.

But the most surprising thing was realizing how ALIVE it is. It is constantly changing. You can hear it crack and rumble like thunder as the ice moves and pushes and creates new cracks. A true spectacle! 🧊

This day hike was hands down the best of my life. It is long and demanding, 24km round-trip trail which takes you through beautiful forest and open spaces with incredible views of Mt Fitz Roy / El Chaltén. While most of the walk is flat, the 1km ascent to the iconic viewpoint was a grueling, knee-breaking climb which felt like it would never end 🤣 but when you finally reach the top, you are rewarded with the most breathtaking views over the bright green laguna and the peaks of El Chaltén. Even though the top of the mountain was covered by a cloud, it was still such an impressive sight that we contemplated it for over an hour.

Back down to the town, I was so tired that I could barely walk! But also I was proud of myself for making it to the top, and yearning more hiking adventures.

I took these photos at the end of our W trek. We were exhausted from the hike, and had just disembarked from a ferry that took us from Glacier Grey to the shores of Lake Pehoe. The park had been our home for 5 days and now we could finally see it in all its glory from outside. And still it didn’t stop to amaze us! From this view, on the other side of the lakes, it was yet again majestic and breathtaking!

Patagonia was probably the highlight of our entire 3-month trip. Ancient glaciers, turquoise lakes, dramatic snow-capped mountain peaks - it has it all! Its beauty is incomparable to anything I’ve ever seen and I look forward to going back one day - maybe next time go for the O circuit?!

For a very long time, I dreamed of taking a sabbatical and travel to South America. Finally being able to go for 3 uninterrupted months was a dream come true! And what’s more, I got to do this with @reid.klootwyk, the best travel companion I could ever wish for. We were privileged to see and experience so many places and cultures. I am incredibly grateful and come back home with a baggage of unforgettable experiences. Now, I’m looking forward to catching up with family and friends, getting back to a routine, exploring Barcelona, working on our new home.

This bus ride from Mendoza to Santiago was absolutely spectacular 🤩 8 hours going through the Andes went by so fast! When booking the bus tickets, we made sure we reserved front seats for panorama views. Best decision ever 🤓

Mendoza is a wine lover’s dream! Top-notch vineyards left and right, wine tastings and museums, even a hop-on hop-off bus tour that takes you to the most prestigious wineries in the region! As someone who is completely ignorant about wine, I learned how to swirl the glass and nod along to notes like “peppery” and “leathery” 🍷

Few cities have left me feeling so enamored the way Buenos Aires did!

The cobbled streets of Palermo, the European architecture of Centro, the longing rhythm of tango, the bitter taste of the first sip of mate, the Argentinian accent with the strong y and ll sounds, the mouthwatering deliciousness of empanadas and asado, the ever-present dulce de leche, the passion for football, the street art … and I could continue!

Buenos Aires has so much culture and character. It is now one of my favorite cities in the world ❤️

Iguazu Falls are on the border of Argentina and Brazil, and can be accessed on both sides. Most locals would recommend 2 days to visit the falls (1 day on each side), so with only 1 day to see everything we had to start very early! We began on the Brazil side, which took about 2 hours; then, we crossed the border to Argentina (and got lost 👀 ); finally we spent the rest of the day exploring the Argentina side in a scorching 37º… 🥵 It was an exhausting day but totally worth it for these incredible views!

Ilha Grande ✨🏝️ a real tropical paradise!

There are no roads in Ilha Grande, and it is largely uninhabited and covered in rainforest. Which means that the only way to reach these paradisiac beaches is only by boat, or by foot! We went for both options and explored most of the south of the island.

We meant to hike to the northern side as well, but sadly we got food poisoning (who knows from what) and had to stay put for a whole day on our last day 😅

Since it’s almost Christmas, why not rewind to a weekend trip to Costa Brava from back in June?! It’s never too late after all…

After leaving Barcelona, our first stop was the charming town of Blanes, and from its hilltop we soaked in great views and looked at interesting trees. Then, we headed to Tossa del Mar for a stroll in the old city, and to Cala S’Alguer for some relax. Afterwards, we visited Calella de Palafrugell, a tranquil fishing village where we had a delicious arroz negro. Finally, we explored the medieval towns of Pals and Peratallada for a jump back in history in a place where time seems to have stopped.

Fun facts about elephants and why they are awesome animals:
- They are super intelligent, self-aware and able to solve math problems. They also have an impressive long term memory.
- They are gentle giants, highly empathetic and compassionate. They live in closely knit societies and always support each other. They display a wide range of emotions including love, joy and grief.
- They are the largest land animal and can weigh up to 7 tons - despite this, their footsteps are extremely quiet thanks to soft cushions under their heels.
- A Twitter theory says that elephants think humans are cute, the same way we think puppies and kittens are cute. What’s not to love?! 🥰

Masai Mara is a relatively small game reserve in Kenya which essentially is a continuation of Serengeti to the north. The concentration of animals is at peak during the dry months of August and September, as animals such as zebras and wildebeest migrate from Serengeti to Masai Mara in search of green grass. We got to see so much in just one day, including the crossing of wildebeest at Mara river - it truly felt like being in a David Attenborough documentary!
